Discover the very best corrosion thickness meters

If you work in a field that provides inspection services, you’re more than likely aware of just how critical a thickness gauge can be. Here at Cygnus Instruments, we provide a range of products to fit any requirement. In short, these devices work by omitting a single or multiple pulses of high-frequency sound through the measured material. There is a delay in the time it takes for the pulse to hit the back wall and send back an echo. The amount of time is used to determine the overall thickness. This reading can be affected if corrosion is present. To provide accurate readings that account for corrosion, we stock a range of Single-Echo and Echo-Echo ultrasonic thickness gauges.

Single-Echo

If heavy front and/ or back wall corrosion is present, the Single-Echo measuring mode excels as with only a single focused beam; reverberations are kept to a minimum. This makes a corrosion thickness meter configured for Single-Echo measuring mode the best choice for situations such as:

  • Cases involving heavy back wall pitting or corrosion
  • Highly attenuative materials
  • Geometric shapes that are irregular by design
  • Plastic pipes

One drawback of the Single-Echo method is that it won’t take into account coatings or paint; these will be included in the thickness measurements taken. Take a look at our Single-Echo page now to find out more.

Echo-Echo

Echo-Echo works in much the same way as Multiple-Echo. It allows a thickness meter to ignore a coating thickness of up to 1mm. Where the two modes differ is that Echo-Echo uses a twin-crystal probe setup making it better suited for use with corrosive surfaces. This is because a focused ‘V-Path’ path is established creating a much stronger signal to be received by the probe. Here at Cygnus Instruments, our Single-Echo and Echo-Echo ultrasonic thickness gauges feature MSI™ technology. This feature is exclusive to Cygnus Instruments and informs the user when a signal remains stable for two seconds or more. The benefit of this feature is that it guarantees a more accurate measurement than one provided by a meter without this feature. If you’re searching for a corrosion thickness meter that provides Single and Echo-Echo modes, you’ll be pleased to hear that we have an excellent range to offer. A few examples include the Cygnus 2+ Hands Free, Cygnus 4+ General Purpose and the Cygnus 6+ Pro.If you’d like more information or wish to discuss a potential purchase, call +44 (0)1305 265533 today and speak to one of our helpful advisors.

Why choose Cygnus Instruments?

Driven by the need to address a gap in the market that was crying out for a reliable hand-held device, the Multiple-Echo was born. Developed by Cygnus Instruments, this product has led to many years of innovation that continues to this very day. Our Multiple-Echo corrosion thickness meters have been further improved upon since, and now, many of our models incorporate Single and Echo-Echo modes as standard.Founded in 1983, Cygnus Instruments have their roots firmly established in the marine inspection industry. We are committed to providing an entirely application-driven, user-focused approach that is built on customer feedback and requirements. It is this approach that drives us to continuously better our services through careful research and development. As a result, you won’t find a more robust corrosion thickness meter anywhere else – perfect for even the harshest environments. As a company, we use only genuine parts and components, such as Lemo® Connectors and Peli® Cases. Furthermore, all of our products, including our ultrasonic thickness gauges, are manufactured right here in the UK. Our company is constantly being audited to ensure that we always deliver to our high standards. As a result, we possess an ISO-9001 certification as well as intrinsically safe certifications (BASEEFA and CSA). Take a look at our ultrasonic thickness gauges on our YouTube channel to see just how tough our thickness measuring equipment is.
