Our Range of Surface Thickness Gauges
At Cygnus Instruments, we stock a range of ultrasonic probes that can measure wall thickness using the Multiple-Echo Technique. This technique uses multiple pulses, providing verified thickness readings and allowing coatings up to 20mm thick to be ignored.
When you come to us for an ultrasonic wall thickness gauge, you will find that we stock a range for different purposes. Our products include:
- Surface Thickness
- Underwater Thickness
- Ultrasonic Probe
- ROV Thickness Gauges and Probe Handlers
- Thickness Gauging Accessories
All Cygnus surface thickness gauges have the facility to use the Multiple Echo measuring technique with a single crystal probe. This provides an accurate, error-checked thickness measurement that ignores coatings.
A short pulse of ultrasound is generated and coupled into the material from the probe. The instrument then listens for back-wall echoes to return to the probe. When the gauge detects three consecutive echo signals of equal spacing, it proceeds to measure the time between these echoes and calculates the material thickness.
As three consecutive echoes are used, any coating will be automatically ignored. Plus, because the spacing between echoes must be equal, any measurement is far more reliable than single-echo or echo to echo.
The Cygnus PLUS+ ultrasonic wall thickness gauge models and the Cygnus underwater gauge have the option to use Echo to Echo mode. This is similar to Multiple Echo as it can be used to read through coatings without the need to remove them, with a maximum coating thickness of 1mm. Unlike Multiple Echo however, Echo-Echo uses a twin crystal probe.
This uses the time taken for echoes of sound to travel through a material and converts is into a thickness measurement. It works the same as the Multiple Echo technique, but uses only two consecutive echo signals and measures the time between these to measure material thickness.
Using the Single-Echo technique requires any coatings or paint to be removed before measurement, otherwise their thickness will be included. It uses the time taken for an echo of sound to travel through a material and converts this into a thickness measurement. A pulse of sound is sent into the material from the transmitting side of the probe and the instrument then waits for this to return to the receiving side.
Why Choose Cygnus Instruments for your Ultrasonic Wall Thickness Gauge?
Founded in 1983, Cygnus Instruments are the experts and pioneered the digital Multiple-Echo technique. This technique has long since been the industry standard for through coating measurement of material thickness. We were driven by the need for hand-held surface thickness gauges and from this drive, Multiple-Echo digital thickness gauges were successfully developed.
Our range has recently been extended to include Echo to Echo and Single-Echo measurement modes to expand the usability of a Cygnus ultrasonic wall thickness gauge. Every Cygnus gauge is robust and simple to use, built to withstand the harshest environments to ensure a product that lasts.
At Cygnus Instruments, high quality comes first and foremost. We are an ISO-9001 certified company with intrinsically safe certifications (BASEEFA and CSA). Our company is constantly being audited to guarantee you the best quality ultrasonic probes on the market.
As a company that works hard to ensure high quality, we’re proud to say that a large number of new clients find their way to us via word of mouth. This means that previous clients are so satisfied with our ultrasonic wall thickness gauge instruments that they highly recommend us.
